Matthew Broderick Talks About His Career Struggles After 'Ferris Bueller'

Matthew Broderick, who starred in the hit 1986 film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” has opened up about his struggles to find work after the film’s success.

Broderick told The Guardian that he found it difficult to break out of the mold of being seen as a child actor. “People associated me with younger roles, but I wanted them to come with me and get used to the fact that I’m wrinkly,” he said.

The actor said that the 1990s were a particularly difficult time for his career. “Lots of ups and downs,” he said. “But I always tried to keep at it, keep my heart in it. Hopefully that keeps you in the game.”

Broderick eventually found success in films such as “Godzilla,” “The Cable Guy,” and “Inspector Gadget.” He also voiced adult Simba in the “Lion King” films throughout the 1990s.

When asked to define his legacy, Broderick said, “Well, I’m Ferris Bueller, I suppose. I have to accept it. And I like it. I’ve made my peace with it.”

Broderick also spoke about his marriage to Sarah Jessica Parker, saying that they keep their relationship out of the spotlight for the sake of their three children.

“Once you start talking about your relationship and your feelings in public you’re in trouble,” he said. “Also, we have children. I don’t want to have my kids reading about our relationship.”

The couple, who have been married since 1997, share three children together: son James, 20, and 13-year-old twins Tabitha and Marion.

Broderick and Parker recently celebrated their 26th wedding anniversary in May. Parker posted a heartwarming tribute to her husband on Instagram, writing, “Happy 26th anniversary my husband. That sure was a nice celebration and a real nice bottle of Champagne. And a gorgeous walk home. Oh the miles we have strolled together. I love you.”

Despite the challenges he has faced in his career, Broderick seems to be at peace with his place in Hollywood. He is grateful for his success, and he is happy with his family life.
