Barbie Becomes Highest-Grossing Movie of 2023 in North America

Barbie, the live-action film directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, has surpassed The Super Mario Bros. Movie as the highest-grossing movie of 2023 in North America.

Barbie has grossed $575.4 million at the domestic box office, while The Super Mario Bros. Movie has grossed $574 million. Barbie has also grossed $1.3 billion globally, while The Super Mario Bros. Movie has grossed $1.35 billion globally.

Barbie is only the second Hollywood blockbuster of 2023 to cross the $1 billion mark, after The Batman. Notably, neither of these films are superhero adventures or sequels in popular franchises.

Barbie had a record-breaking theatrical run when it was released in July. It had the best debut of the year, with $162 million in ticket sales. It also remained the No. 1 movie for four consecutive weekends.

Barbie also had the biggest opening weekend for a film directed by a woman. It also became the highest-grossing movie directed solely by a woman.

Barbie is now the 14th-biggest domestic release and 20th-biggest global release of all time. It has also surpassed Christopher Nolan’s superhero epic The Dark Knight ($536 million) as the highest-grossing domestic release in Warner Bros. history.

Barbie is written and directed by Greta Gerwig, who is known for her films Lady Bird and Little Women. The film follows Barbie as she leaves behind the seemingly perfect world of Barbie Land to discover the highs and lows of life in the real world.

The cast of Barbie also includes America Ferrera, Issa Rae, Will Ferrell, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, and Michael Cera.
